Élan n, ardor, life energy –
The Élan Program is designed to enhance quality of life through
abstinence. Distinguished by its pioneering development and belief in
the efficacy of intensive non-residential treatment programs, Sage
Counselling and Addiction Services Inc. presents The Élan Program
for alcohol, drug and process dependencies.
The Elan
Outpatient Treatment Program for Substance Use, Abuse or Dependence
facilitates a curriculum which is equivalent to inpatient treatment,
but with the ability for the individual to remain at home and to be
supported by family and friends and within their community.
The Élan Program is an
Abstinence-Based Intensive Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment
Program provided for more than 20 years to help individuals recovery
from substance and process addictions. The program is endorsed
by Medical Addiction Evaluators and is also suitable for fulfilling
Occupational Health Requirements.
The success of an Outpatient Treatment Program is predicated on the principle that participants are able to draw upon the support of family, friends and their community; applying their newly acquired skills in daily living while continuing to live at home.
The ability to continue living at home and maintaining many of your commitments while attending treatment and remaining abstinent. This may include care for dependent children, work requirements, school / classes, volunteering, social activities, hobbies, etc.
Implementing and integrating healthy coping strategies and resiliency into daily living while being able to bring back and share your experience in real-time. There is value in immediately putting into practice the teachings of treatment, testing the skills in “real life”, and to then discuss the experience with the opportunity for immediate feedback and support.
Building friendships with peers in recovery. Participants can develop relationships in their outpatient peer therapy groups and these peers can then become a valuable source of long-lasting abstinent support.
While by law a participant has no obligation to disclose their need for residential treatment to anyone, many people find that in reality it can be difficult to explain away a prolonged absence from work or school. Since a participant may continue to live at home and to fulfill their other responsibilities, their privacy may be more assured.
The Élan Program is undertaken as a group process. Group size is kept small to allow individual insight around the process of addiction, recovery, behaviour patterns, self-empowerment and personal growth and development.
The Élan Program follows a closed-group format allowing participants to start and finish with the same group members, and often allowing them to establish a deeper connection to the process as compared to programs with rolling start dates and participants rotating in and out.
The Élan Program is provided through an online video platform. Participants are required to have a suitable and private space, in addition to a suitable tablet or computer in addition to a camera and microphone and a strong internet connection.
The Élan Program requires that participants be fully detoxed and mentally/physically stable, abstinent and able to participate in an intensive, small group process.
The Élan Intensive Outpatient Program curriculum follows a bio-psycho-social approach and utilizes a combination of written and audio-visual materials.
Participants are engaged through extensive verbal interaction and processing of the modules in a manner that relates personally to each individual.
Participants are provided the entire curriculum in written format, with additional resources provided.
As part of the program, participants are guided to develop personalized relapse prevention, self-care and after-care plans to support their ongoing success in recovery.
Topics covered include, but are not limited to, initiating recovery, the continuum of substances use disorders, coping with change, self-care, healthy support systems, healthy communication, relationships, mental health, stress and aftercare.
Abstinence is monitored through random biological testing over the course of the program.
Discharge summary reports outlining participation and progress may be provided for employers or to fulfill occupational
health requirements.
